Use of Cocaine and Other Illicit Drugs is Relatively Low

According to the 2004 Canadian Addiction Survey* 79% of BC residents used alcohol at least once in the past year. In contrast, use of illicit drugs such as cocaine and ecstasy is relatively low.

Approximately 3% of British Columbians used cocaine at least once in the past 12 months, and rates for other illicit drugs are lower. About 1% of BC residents used either hallucinogens, ecstasy or amphetamines in the past year. Data for heroin use is not available.

While past year use of illicit drugs by BC residents is low, rates are higher for 'at risk' groups such as club drug users and injection drug users.

*The survey sample included 3,000 British Columbians aged 15 and older.
