
The majority of deaths related to substance use in British Columbia are related to smoking. Calculating the number of deaths per 100,000 BC residents for 2006 reveals
- 96.3 tobacco-related deaths per 100,000 people,
- 19.5 alcohol-related deaths per 100,000 people, and
- 8.6 illicit drug-related deaths per 100,000 people in BC for 2006.
Tobacco mortality rates have been declining since 2001 in BC while alcohol and illicit drug mortality rates have remained relatively static. Between 2001 and 2006, tobacco-related deaths per 100,000 residents have fallen approximately 9%.
