(8p)
A Matter of Substance? Alcohol or Drugs: Does it make a difference to the child?
The organization Aberlour initiated the idea of a Think Tank to promote open and constructive dialogue on appropriate responses to children affected by parental alcohol and drug use. This was a response to the growing concerns about the impact on children of living with a problem alcohol or drug user. (36p)
A Proposal for Changes to BC Liquor Prices in order to Reduce Harm from Alcohol Consumption
This paper presents a case for reforming the way mark-ups are applied to the prices of alcohol sold in liquor stores in BC in order to improve public health and safety outcomes. (12p)
A Randomized Controlled Trial of an Internet-Based Intervention for Alcohol Abusers
Misuse of alcohol imposes a major public health cost, yet few problem drinkers are willing to access in-person services for alcohol abuse. The development of brief, easily accessible ways to help problem drinkers who are unwilling or unable to seek traditional treatment services could therefore have significant public health benefit. (10p)
A Review of Research into the Impacts of Alcohol Warning Labels on Attitudes and Behaviour
This report summarizes the published international research that bears on the question as to whether the proposed new legislation for Canadian alcohol warning labels is likely to have positive effects on alcohol consumption and/or alcohol-related harms for different population groups. (16p)
A Summary of the Review of the Effectiveness of Treatment for Alcohol Problems
This summary document describes the chapter structure and gives a brief overview of the content of the extensive evidence-based expert review, the Review of the Effectiveness of Treatment for Alcohol Problems. It is intended as a companion document, and sets out all of the conclusions of the review under the original chapter and section headings of the full report. (16p)
A Systematic Review of Emergency Care Brief Alcohol Interventions for Injury Patients
Confirmation that brief advice to risky drinkers identified in accident and emergency departments can cut drinking and reduce the chance of further injuries and re-admissions. The issue now is why this happens sometimes but not always.
Addiction Careers and the Natural History of Change
This brief discusses the evidence supporting the theory that most drug misusers will "mature out" of their drug use, albeit after many years in some cases, while recognizing there will be a number of problem users who, from choice or circumstance, will never come to the end of their "addiction careers", which is defined as the period in which substance use causes problems for the user or those they are in contact with. (8p)
Adolescent Substance Use and Related Harms in British Columbia
The 2008 BC Adolescent Health Survey included 50 of BC’s 59 school districts and 92% of public school students (grades 7 to 12). There have been encouraging downward trends in usage rates for alcohol, tobacco and marijuana over the past 10 years in BC. However, rates of risky use and related harms remain a significant concern, particularly among older students. (8p)  Appendix
